Winter in Bangalore is a beautiful time of the year with the trees full of purple flowers and many planned holidays with the family.

Dermatologist Dr Tina Ramachander says there are some common diseases that flare up during winters and here are some tips to take care of your skin.

Atopy can run in families and usually affects children above 1.
Diet plays a major role in atopic patients. They are usually allergic to nuts, milk , gluten etc. While eliminating it would be a great strategy, nutrition also has to be kept in mind.
It’s best to not experiment and go for time tested PH-balanced applications in such cases. This leads to early prevention and reduction in scars, and less number of French leaves from school.
Psoriasis is another disease which flares during winters and this disease has many types of presentations. Some complain of itchy scalp, some itchy flaky palms and soles. It can affect nails and the entire body as well.
There is a fear in general about this disorder but it’s non-contagious to begin with and the affected person is able to do all routines normally. When it affects the joints, this can be painful and requires proper management.
Regular barrier repair creams, steroids and calcineurin inhibitors can give relief. Depending on the extent of lesions, it can be managed with creams, oral tablets, light therapy to injections which are available to control the disease. Psoriasis, till today, doesn’t have a cure. Doctors can only control it since we are not aware of its exact cause.
this type of dandruff is an ongoing battle for many patients who have had it since years and unable to find out how to take care of it. Dandruff is not a disease but the sequel to oily scalp, fungal flare ups, hormonal imbalances, stress levels, poor lifestyle and dietary habits.
It’s best to adapt to the changes required for reducing dandruff. Oil application is not recommended when dandruff is present. There are oral medications which can be taken to reduce dandruff and these are quiet efficient in controlling it.
