Keep fungal infections at bay during rains

During rains, the most common skin problems are fungal infections. Many people may not know it, but this fungal disease is contagious and affects all ages, hence there is a danger of it spreading to other family members.

It generally manifests with an itchy skin rash seen in patches with a border. But, if those affected do not take it seriously, it can become very resistant to treatment.

Dr Tina Ramachander, a dermatologist, dermatosurgeon and laser surgeon at north Bangalore, says one should not ignore such signs. “fungal infections can affect the scalp of younger kids leading them to scratch their heads vigorously, also  among home makers who are constantly dipping their hands in water for either washing, cleaning or cooking. As a result of keeping their hands in water for long periods, their nails get discoloured which is a sure indicator of the fungus forming.’’

The fungus also worsens with exposure to humid weather. Dr Tina says excessive sweating worsens the condition as well as when one wears clothes that are not completely dry. “It is always advisable to Sun dry well, and iron cloths before wearing them to reduce the dampness , with special care for inner garments.

Fungal infections also affects people with low immunity, those who lead stressful lives, have a lower haemoglobin count and diabetics.

Sedentary lifestyle is one of the main reasons for the fungus to spread. Being seated most of the time also can trigger a fungal attack, says the doctor.

Whenever such fungal infections are noticed, doctors advise patients to approach qualified dermatologists instead of reaching out to the neighbourhood chemist or experimenting with self-medication. “Nowadays, fungal infections have become very resistant to treatment. This is due to rampant misuse of steroid creams that are self-prescribed by patients or picked up over the counter at pharmacies,’’ says Dr Tina.

She explains that a classical pattern of healing when using such steroid creams is that there will be an aggressive recurrence. “At this point, patients rush to a dermatologist but it’s a difficult task for us as the fungus has already grown resistant to treatment. Newer generation antifungals, including oral and topical applications, however, provide some hope towards cure. But, it takes time.’’

The fungus can be kept at bay by following simple steps such as ensuring hygiene and keeping oneself dry during humid conditions, checking on the haemoglobin count, improving immunity, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, changing socks and inner wear regularly, keeping nails trimmed and brushing them once a day .
